Personally, I was very badly bullied, thrown into trash cans, beaten up, called “faggot” and “queer” in drive-by attacks, physically and verbally assaulted while holding hands with my boyfriend, rotten food thrown at me, etc. in high school for being the only boy in choir and while I’m stronger now, the truth is it left scars that I still struggle with. When my student told me that her young coworker was disowned by his parents for coming out made me so sad. It’s 2020 and this is still happening. I’m doing what I can to foster safe spaces in our BC schools: inclusion and diversity for all people, regardless of who you love.
